Let’s be honest here - Darcy Regier did more than any of us expected today by actually signing someone. Especially considering his recent comments that he expects most of the changes for the Sabres to occur through trades this offseason.
That makes sense considering the Sabres have a surplus of forwards and defensemen, assuming Buffalo is going to bring up some kids like Kennedy, Gerbe, and Weber. Heck, let’s throw Myers in there as well.
The problem is that the players they wish to deal aren’t going to bring back much in return. Hecht, Tallinder and Lydman often are thrown out as possible trades, but the issue remains: who would want them for any appreciable return? So if the Sabres truly are going to remake a tougher roster, then someone we don’t expect will have to go. Fortunately, there aren’t a ton of players on the Sabres who are fan-favorites these days, so there aren’t many guys who can be dealt that will make us sad.
So it’s great that Steve Montador is a Sabre, but it’s one step on a journey to toughen up this team. Some other pieces are going to need to move as well
